Using emoticons increases engagement

I’ve met several people who thought using emoticons is displaying brands’ or companies lack of seriousness. They always tried to convince me how users HATE emoticons, but were always stunned by the data later on. Why? Well, because data shows that users LOVE emoticons. Even more – using emoticons will bring better engagement.

Using emoticons can increase likes by 57 percent.

Believe it or not – using emoticons can (and will) increase your engagement. And this is not just some sort of fun fact everybody’s talking about. I tried it when I first started with community management and saw it with my own eyes.

Careful selection is important

Despite all the data you must be aware that using emoticons is a skill you must master. Not every emoticon can go with every post. Use different emoticons for different posts.

For example: Use Screen Shot 2014-04-01 at 21.45.01 with cheeky posts or Screen Shot 2014-04-01 at 21.41.33  with posts where you mention how much you love something.

Using emoticons will humanise your brand or company. But use them smart.
